Toronto Cares Initiative is run by a 10 member, entirely volunteer, board of directors & advisory council (plus an Executive Director), with almost half of its leadership members being recipients of our services, to ensure our clients have a voice in the direction of the organization.
Executive Director & Advisory Council Member
A single mom of a teenager, with several disabilities and mental health challenges of her own, Sarah founded Toronto Cares in March 2020 during the first lockdown.
Originally from the tiny village of Madoc, Ontario, Sarah moved to Toronto in May of 2010 & has been an active community member ever since.
She has been volunteering since the age of five with Girl Guides of Canada, as well as other organizations and initiatives. Sarah continues to run Toronto Cares, on a volunteer basis, seven days a week.
Her background is in psychology, addictions and special events.
Sarah has dedicated her life to giving back to her community and assisting the most vulnerable members of society.
In May 2023, Sarah stepped down as President of the Board, in order to become the Executive Director of the organization, to oversee a huge Federal Grant.
President of the Board
Originally from Weston, now living in the Roncesvalles area of Toronto, Owen was raised by a low-income single mother and is now a father of two.
He's been involved with Toronto Cares since 2020 as a volunteer driver and is affectionately referred to as "Superman" by his fellow board members, since he is always there when help's needed.
Secretary of the Board
Originally from Thornhill, Esther currently lives in North York with her partner and 7 year old son.
She has been a part of Toronto Cares almost since the beginning, experiencing all sides of the organization as a volunteer, donor, and recipient as well as being on the board.
Her other time is often spent in a little balloon shop making decor for events.
Treasurer of the Board
An Immigrant from India, now settled in Toronto, along with his spouse. Bikash has been acting as Treasurer of Toronto Cares since 2022, managing the accounts and finances of the organization.
He spends his work days conducting audits for various organisations.
Advisory Council Member
Janice is a journalist and academic who has worked across Canada and Europe.
She has been teaching as a full-time faculty member in the School of Journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University since 2007, and served as department chair (2016-2021) and associate chair (2014-2016).
Janice worked as a reporter, producer and senior producer at CBC in Toronto/Regina/London, UK, and at TVOntario in Toronto and Ottawa. She serves on two professional boards: the National Newsmedia Council and RTDNA Canada. She has been teaching as a full-time faculty member in the School of Journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University since 2007, and served as department chair (2016-2021) and associate chair (2014-2016).

Advisory Council Member
Born and raised in Richmond Hill, Jason has been involved with Toronto Cares as a volunteer driver since 2020, then joined the board in 2023.
He has been volunteering at various organizations for almost a decade and has always had a passion for helping others.
Outside of his extensive volunteer work, Jason spends his days working in sales at West Fraser and playing hockey as often as he can.
Advisory Council Member
A passionate advocate for social justice, Sylvia leverages her academic background and 20 years of entrepreneurial success to support Toronto Cares Initiative ensuring vital donations reach those in need. In retirement, she volunteers her administrative and financial expertise to Toronto Cares and other community boards/organizations including the housing co-op where she lives.
Sylvia curates a unique peace and social justice library for Toronto Friends and captures the hidden beauty of of the city and its parks through photography.
A champion of Indigenous self-determination and a spirited member of the Raging Grannies, she also enjoys family moments with her grandchildren and song-writing. Sylvia is a dedicated Global Citizen.
